Content Directory
Our Content Directory will be published in Phase Two of our launch. If you are intersted in creating content and listing it in our directory you can learn more about how the directory is organized below. We describe both the taxonomy and the ontology which defines the rules which govern how the taxonomy is created and maintained. You will also find information about stewardship committees which provide additional opportunities for you to become better connected to others in the network and better market yourself and build your reputation as a subject matter expert.
Content Sites
Our content is created by experts in the network who have their own Content Sites where they post any content they create. Experts are free to decide whether to sell their content or make it available for free. We have a simple Self-Publishing model where we share revenue with our experts. Our content sites support all forms of media including text, graphics, audio, video and rich media. You can learn more about the various types of content sites we offer and how our Self-Publisihing model works at How It Works. Our feature set for our Content Sites include all the most popular media and networking tools including: News; Video Gallery for on-demand video; Blogs; Polls; Live Broadcast Events; Form builder; RSS feeds & aggregator; and multiple page sites with navigation. You can select the content site that best meets your needs.
All of our content is searchable and is also organized into categories which can be browsed in our Content Directories. Below you will find information explaining how we organize our content.
The Four Main Content Categories
The Expert Knowledge Network is organized into four main categories:
1. Premium Content
Premium Content includes content produced by The Expert Knowledge Network. These are organized into program series that address specific areas of interest. Content is usually offered in the form of seminars and workshops. We also organize Knowledge Networking Events around these premium program series.
2. Professional Development
Professional Development contains content produced by any of our experts who have expertise in teaching or training professional development. In some cases, our premium content will also address professional development in which case we will provide links back to that content.
3. Business Services
Business Services includes content produced by any of our experts who have expertise in providing business services. This content provides teaching and training content as well as product information. Any content that includes product information is labeled as such so that if you are looking for training content you will not be mislead by companies using our network to provide product demos. We recognize that product information is a valuable resource and we support the use of our network for disseminating this information as long as it is clearly labeled.
4. Industry Sectors
Industry sectors reflect all sectors recognized by the current structure of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Our own taxonomy can be expanded to recognize new technologies and new industries as they appear. Additions to our taxonomy are handled through our stewardship committees. We have identified certain broad areas that cover multiple industry segments. We define these as Knowledge Domains. Content can be listed both in one of our defined Knowledge Domains as well as in specific industry segments as identified by the NAICS codes. Our search engine supports searches by Knowledge Domain, industry segment (NAICS code), and any other meta data included by the content producer.
Ontology
A taxonomy consists of the categories of content. An ontology includes both the taxonomy and the rules for creating and administrating that taxonomy.
The most important characteristic of a knowledgebase is the quality of the knowledge and information that it makes available. The second most important characteristic of a knowledgebase is the ability to be easily navigated. The history of knowledge has evolved over the centuries with basic taxonomy being redefined, beginning with early pre-scientific Greek concepts up to current views reflected by University curricula. Academic structures do not take into account the real world processes engaged in by businesses and public entities in their daily workings where a great deal of new knowledge is created and passed on through organizational learning, including informal training and learning processes that transmit both knowledge and skills. The amount of new knowledge being created in the real world has grown dramatically in the last fifty years and this trend continues to accelerate. The Expert Knowledge Network was created in part to deal with this growing phenomenon and the challenges we all face in dealing with this information in our own careers.
These real world processes collectively represent a poorly defined database of knowledge that is largely overlooked by the academic world and poorly supported by public and private organizational learning systems. It is this knowledgebase that The Expert Knowledge Network seeks to capture, transmit more effectively through a media network created for the subject matter experts who represent the human capital that contains this living database of knowledge and information. The Expert Knowledge Network is in the business of communicating the human capital that is our collective knowledgebase.
The goals of The Expert Knowledge Network include:
- Creating a living ontology that clearly establishes the width and breadth of this knowledgebase and the rules that govern its use and growth.
- Creating a living taxonomy that is carefully monitored through a stewardship of subject matter experts which is intuitive for users and easy to navigate.
- Providing context between this knowledgebase and academic taxonomies and processes for enhancing knowledge transfer between the business world and the academic world, recognizing that knowledge flows in both directions.
- Delivering a business solution that offers subject matter experts a convenient means to deliver and monetize their content.
Our commitment to creating a meaningful ontology helps us achieve these goals. We have created our taxonomy with an eye on growing our database of content in ways that are easy to understand and easy to navigate. This structure allows us to provide both advanced search engine functions and directories that can be browsed directly. The Expert Knowledge Network contains five directories that can be browsed directly, including all four main categories of content (Premium Content, Professional Development, Business Services, and Industry Sectors) and our Knowledge Domains.
Knowledge Domains
In addition to the industry segments recognized by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) we have identified certain broad areas that cover multiple industry segments. We define these as Knowledge Domains.
Currently we recognize the following Knowledge Domains:
- Energy
- Information Technology
- Digital Media
- Biomed
- Engineering
- Manufacturing
- Consumer/Retail
- Finance & Insurance
- Business Management
Stewardship Committees
The Expert Knowledge Network creates stewardship committees overseeing broad areas or classes of content. Knowledge Domains are all available for the establishment of stewardship committees. Stewardships are created by forming committees of content producers and subject matter experts with expertise in the areas concerned whenever qualified members are identified. Anyone may submit an application for membership on a committee whether or not that committee has been set up. Membership in the Premier Consultant Group is preferred but not required. Membership is voluntary and limited to maximum period of five years. Stewardship committees can be established for any content category. Please contact us if you would like to start a stewardship committee for you community of expertise.
